The pump has a filter screen on the bottom to filter out particles that would damage the pump. There is also a filter on the engine. Have you changed it?
If the engine does’t get enough fuel to run, how do you know the pump is good?
I’d test the fuel pressure , change the fuel filter , run some fuel treatment through it and then see how it runs.

yes all of them have a strainer on them,run a check on the amount of pressure its getting from the back pump to the front pump and see what it reads,the pick up pump caused a lot of problems on those trucks and so did the push pump,then you,ll know,good luck.
