Can anyone tell me what useful purpose it serves to 'lift' a 4×4 pickup truck?

I have owned dozens of 4×4 vehicles over the years and never needed anything more than stock ride height for driving in snow and extreme weather conditions, as well as off-road service and towing.
As I see it, all you are doing by ‘lifting’ a truck is raising the center of gravity and screwing up the handling capabilities of the truck, decreasing fuel mileage and making it less safe to operate on public roadways.

Get your puppy ass off the porch and come run with the big dogs and you will see why stock ride height doesn’t cut it. That’s fine if YOU never needed any lift. My daily driver is an ’08 silverado and its stock but when it comes to the play toys a gravel road does not constitute off-road. Have you seriously never buried a truck in the mud to the frame?

well the reason most people including myself "lift" our vehicle is to make more room under the wheel-wells for bigger tires, get more suspension travel, and lift also gives you more clearance, better for going through deep snow or mud.
And your absolutly right. If your not doing anything extreme its a waste of money.
But some people have money to spend and thats what they choose to do with it.
If you have to work under your truck, you can stand up (?) You can see over top of the semi in front (?) When you are stuck in a river, you can keep dry sitting on the roof (?)
if you don’t need it i wouldn’t worry about it…i havn’t had a need to lift anything either but they do that to get bigger tires, looks, higher clearance, and other reasons a couple of previous posters have listed…mostly used when muddin is a hobby

maybe because you don’t view it as a sport?
like a street-able dirt bike. a "scrambler" as they were once referred to. same thing. they have a raised center of gravity (for ground clearance), decreased fuel mileage (due to gearing for the trail), and poor handling on the street (due to aggressive cleats).
most of us can’t afford two trucks. therefore, we make a dual purpose vehicle. so when you see it on the street, you’re right. it’s all of what you mentioned. but when you see us off road, you might change your mind.
just like you going for a Sunday ride for no reason. we do too. we just do it off road. mostly, where you cant go!

I can see the advantage of lifting a truck but most lift jobs are done to just lift the truck by adding bigger tires the clearance gained is minimal if the rear differential is not raised it makes no difference to the over all off road performance compared toa stock ride 4×4. There is many other modification for 4×4 that include raising the suspension as well as tires and more. If You want to play in serious conditons correct modifications help drastically but if you are happy driving on the black top there is no reason to lift your ride.
