Can I tow a 4×4 truck on a car dolly if it's in 4×2 mode?

I know that you aren’t supposed to tow an AWD or 4×4 vehicle on a car dolly, or it could mess things up. I am considering buying a 4×4 truck, but it may need to be towed to my place on a car dolly. If it can go into 4×2 mode, is this safe?
It’s a 1995 Chevy S-10 4×4 pickup. It’s also a stick shift, not sure if that matters.

If you have to use a tow dolly, the safe way to do this is to put the front wheels on the dolly, and remove the drive shaft.
With the drive shaft removed, you can safely tow the vehicle and there is no danger of transmission damage.
Stick shift helps check with GM and make sure.

I have seen it happen. to me.Truck towed My Van from the front and I had to replace the transmission 3 months Later. Wasn’t anything wrong with the trans before that.
I have had Jeep Cherokees on a tow dolly. Just shifted the transfer case into neutral. No problems.
May not work on the S10 as it may not have a shift lever for the transfer case like the CHerokee.
