Can you mess up a 4×4 by engaging it on normal road conditions when it is not needed?

I think I heard that if you turn on the optional 4×4 system on an SUV when it is not needed it can ruin it. Is this true?

This website has a pretty detailed explanation of what goes on with your car:

And here is a photo so that you can see what can happen:

I don’t think that you can damage the 4×4 function. However, it will wear your tyres down more quickly, so you will be up for new tyres sooner.

YES YOU CAN DAMAGE YOUR 4X4 BY USING IT ON DRY PAVEMENT, NEVER DO THIS, YOU WILL START BREAKING YOUR 4X4 COMPONETS

ALSO YOU WILL DECREASE YOUR FUEL MILEAGE AND WEAR OUT YOUR VEHICLE FASTER

WHEN YOU ARE DOING NORMAL DRIVING, YOU SHOULD BE RUNNING YOUR VEHICLE IN 2WD MODE

AWD IS NOT THE SAME AS 4X4, REMEMBER THAT

4X4 MODE IS THERE FOR WHEN YOU NEED IT
