Diesel pickup truck question.. what does FS mean?

I have been reading up on some diesel pickups, basically trying to compare the Chevy 3500HD with the Duramax vs. Ford F-350 with the powerstroke and the Dodge 3500 with the Cummins.

On one website with some reviews there were two terms they talked about that I have no idea what they stand for.
The 1st was FS…. I believe the context was… "what is the best FS diesel pickup?", can anyone tell me what FS means?

The other was IFS… I am not sure if it has any connection to FS or if its something completely different, but it is bugging me that I cannot figure out what either one mean.

I know a quite a bit about cars, but am just recently getting into diesel trucks and do not have a whole lot of knowledge about them yet, so I apologize ahead of time if these two phrases (FS and IFS) are very commonly known and I sound stupid for not knowing what they mean.

And just in case someone feels like answering "google it, or try doing an internet search you lazy a$$, well, I have. I have spent the last 1/2 hour trying to figure this out with absolutely no luck.

    in this case it was Full size pickup or fs for short. its completely different. I F.S.. is independant front suspension (ifs) as to the 3 trucks they compair so differently its amazing. Ford and Chryler opted to go to deisel engine builders that have long, established credentials. Cummins is still today probably the best known name in the diesel comercial line or tied with catapillar at least. detroit deisel is right up there though. chrysler won over cummins to produce an engine for their pick ups and has carried it since. one draw back to this arrangement though is that research and developement for the non industrial engines is likely to take second place at cummins! Fords engine is developed by International harvester best recognised as IHC on the sides of comercial trucks or simply international. they have an unprecidented history of long term dependable diesel powered farm equipment. hense Harvester in the name! they dropped the engine building in the over the road larger 18 wheelers opting for cummins/cat and detroit to supply those engines. instead they stayed with medium size and smaller diesel engines for local delivery trucks , farm equipment, busses, etc. Ford went to them with this issue wanting a strong durrable dieslel engine designed specificly for use on a pick up truck. they do research and developement backed by Ford motor company funding and in my opinion its working well thus far. the duramax engine is the newest of the group developed by gm but make no mistake unlike previous deisel engines by gm this is a diesel from the ground up in every way. diesel engines are a strange bread and produce power in low end curves. almost from the idle they begin to pull strong but only to low rpms unlike a v8 going to 5 thousand rpms. 3 thousand would be screeming on a diesel. the thing to concider is actual driving comfort and control. one seldom actually thinks about the way the truck looks when behnd the wheel but we do realise we are bumping objects, reaching out of the way for common needs and well getting saddle sores from long rides on the trail! this too is important when choosing a truck. all these trucks will feel real smooth on a smooth paved road but what of the pot hole covered road or the dirt path to the dump? this is where the boys and men seperate. Ford borrows from years and years of impressive big rig design and lincoln contanental engineering producing a vehicle every other truck has been chasing for 25 years. the dodge hopefully has corrected its electrical system problems and please tell me the trans wont be the automatic in the dodge. I have heard 5-1 complaints of the chrysler automatic than any other truck.

    As others have said, F.S. stands for Full Size while I.F.S. stands for Independent Front Suspension. But another term you might want to know is SFA, which stands for Solid Front axle. Ford is the only Diesel pickup manufacturer that still uses SFA’s. In my opinion, SFA is the only way to go.
