Do people who own SUVs actually ever engage the 4×4?

Most of the people I see driving SUVs are soccer moms with kids. Do they ever have reason to engage the 4×4?

Many people do not actually use their 4×4 for anything other than the rare snow. My Grand Cherokee is in 4×4 (basically AWD) full-time, so I’m always using it :).

I own a 4X4 GMD Jimmy and YES I do use the 4 wheel drive at least on a weekly basis.

I know in Washington they do…

It is safer driving in 4 wheel drive in the snow. If you have kids it is nice having that added security. Some cars are now being built with 4 wheel drive. It does not necessarily mean you use more gas or anything it all depends on the size of the motor.

When I had a truck I beat it up all the time off road. I figured if I was going to pay that much extra for a truck and insurance I was going to make the most of it.

Good question! I’m not sure. Probably not, or rarely. It’s one of those security blankets – just in case I need to go out in a blizzard… get caught in a blizzard… etc. etc.

I wonder how many are equipped with 4WD.
You can buy any of them 2WD, for the ground clearance (because you might be driving in a field) – for the interior space – and for the good feeling of being higher up, with better visibility – while driving.

    Most SUV’s don’t have 4 wheel drive.

i think depends on where you are. if you are in the city, then you don’t need it. but if you live in the countryside, esp in countries where there are no roads or their roads got big potholes, then it be a life saver.

The 4×4 is designed to give additional traction in slippery or other wise challenging driving conditions.
Most "Soccer Moms" probably will never need the 4×4 engaged unless they are picking up the kids in the middle of a blizzard. Many of the newer models are either all wheel drive or automatic 4×4. I think most people seldom use the full capability’s of there SUVs.

My wife uses a lot in the winter while taking the kids to school,so what if a so called soccer mom buys an SUV with 4wd and never uses it,it’s not your money.
