Dodge Dakota 2006.. are they good?

I read some mixed reviews. I am looking at a 2006 one, in good condition, for a reasonable price. I wonder if I should take it. reliable? problems? I know gas mileage is poor, but is it that poor compared to other 4×4 for example?
Do you recommend one?
Thank you all for the answers so far! I think I will just go ahead and buy it. it’s for a good price, given it is kind of new, and in a very good condition. so probably I can afford a bit of extra gas..

the fuel mileage is not as good as it is on other vehicles but they are good trucks,i own an 03 model and i like it a lot,i pull a mid size boat with it with no problems at all,the only problem i had with mine was the transmission was bad in it when i bought it and i knew that part of it,but since replacing it ,i have had no problems from it at all,if you compare the mileage to other vehicles it is kind of bad,but not that bad,if the price is right and you like the truck buy it,i only gave 2500.00 for mine with 85 thousand on it ,but a bad transmission, have someone or a good reputable shop check it over for you real good,it may save you from making a big mistake, good luck on it.

Dodge Dakota’s are great trucks…but only when they work. Dodge is unfortunately poor in the reliability department so if I were you, I’d avoid Dodge unless I were able to get a great warranty. The Dodge Dakota I had a few years back started having serious engine issues as soon as my factory warranty ran out. Thankfully I had purchased an extended warranty which ended up saving me thousands. Unfortunately it continually had problems so I had to trade it in for something more reliable.

The Dodge Dakota is one of my favorite small trucks. I’ve owned three over the years… Two V-8 4×4’s and a V-6 2wd. As you already know, the fuel mileage isn’t the greatest, but they are comfortable to drive and the ones I owned were very reliable. The V-8s both had the factory towing package, and I frequently used them to tow trailers (up to 6,000 lb) through the mountains in the Pacific Northwest and western states.

Two things to look for… Go for the extended or 4-door cab and the V-8 engine. The V-6 is a bit on the wimpy side, and a standard cab might be a bit small for the average sized American male driver

I’d suggest taking a look at the Consumer Reports used car guide for records and repair history. Don’t buy it, just look at it at the news-stand. The Dakota has never had a great reliability record but I bought a 99 4×4 in 2000 with 4500 miles and still drive it every day to work. I had one front CV joint replaced and the injector base plate, (both under warranty), over all these years and everything else was just minor standard maintenance stuff. I’ll give you 3 warnings, first, if you are taller than 5’10" you’ll not have enough leg room. Second, do not buy the V6 engine, go with the V8. The MPG is the same, (not great), and the V6 does not have the torque to take a hill in cruise control without downshifting. It will flat drive you crazy if you live in a hilly area. Third, be aware that Dodges do not have great value retention so buy it to keep and not to trade in a year or two. Overall however I’ve been quite pleased with the truck which rides pretty well, has a great air conditioner, can haul a load without squatting down, and the 4×4 has pulled me through some really crappy weather without fail. I really loved the style of the 98 through 01 and that’s why I bought it. I don’t think there is a prettier truck on the road today than those from that early body style. To be honest I think Dodge ruined the look when they started making it angular and I find the 06 model quite ugly. That being said, if you like the looks, I think you’ll like the truck.

They are really good, but just make sure you get a V8 so you have alot of power.
