If you buy a Jeep Cherokee with 4WD yes you have the ability to send power to all 4 wheels. If its only a 2WD model only the rear wheels receive power.

Engagement of the 4WD system depends on which transfer case you have.

Quadra-Drive and Quadra-Trac systems are full time 4WD and require no shifting to engage it is done automatically via clutch packs in the transfer case.

Command-Trac, Selec-Trac, systems are part time 4WD with the exception of Selec-Trac which is actually both part time and full time 4WD in one unit. Command Trac transfer cases are just part time 4WD, you drive in 2WD unless road conditions get to the point where you need more traction such as snow and ice then you can engage the 4WD by simply pulling a lever, you don’t have to get out and turn hubs or anything its all done for you.
