How do i turn on 4×4 in my 1996 jeep grand cherokee?

I keep trying to move the lever but it doesnt budge. Do i need to pull harder, or is there a certain drive mode i should be in (ex. D,R,N)? I have tried all but its not moving.

I would try rolling like under 5mph and put it in neutral, then yank up hard on the 4×4 lever, maybe its just stuck. Its pretty robust, so you arent’ going to hurt anything by pulling pretty hard on it.

if that doesn’ t do it, I don’t know what I’d do.

Something is wrong with the 4-wheel selection linkage. Most of the time it has fallen off the mount.

Crawl under the Jeep to the 4x4shifter and you’ll see.

What you need to do is the two handed trick… Put the Jeep transmission in Park with your right hand with your foot on brake… Left hand on transfercase lever (4wd stick)… As you start to pull the trans shifter down to drive – rather slowly – pull up on the 4wd shifter.. If your left handed you might have to switch hands – my daughter is left handed and has to do this with different hands. Grime and dirt can build up but it will get easier as you use the 4wd shifter.. Hope that helps.
