how do you engage 4×4 in jeep yj?

I bought a 95 yj four cylinder .I have never off roaded and im looking forward to learning so any tips are welcome. My bigest question is if im puting it in 4h or 4L do I hit the clutch or just simply slap it in.

    Use the clutch. And it’s not ‘shift on the fly’ in the modern sense, they just mean you don’t have to get out of the vehicle and manually lock the hubs on the front wheel.

    4H can be engaged at anytime by moving the transfer case shifter into that position, although Jeep says it’s ok to do, I think it puts additional wear and tear on the drive line, and have always suggested you pull over and engage your 4H from a stop, if you must do it while moving I wouldn’t suggest over 25-30mph. 4L is only for really deep, steep, or heavy opsticals you must be at a complete stop for 4L to be engaged sometimes it helps to be neutral when shifting into 4L.
