How much does it cost to make a 4X2 1996 Dodge Ram into a 4X4?

I am about to buy a 1996 Dodge Ram SLT 1500 4X2 and I was wanting to get an estimate on how much it would cost to change it to a 4X4 with junkyard or refurbished parts. I know what all pieces are necessary for the swap, but what I don’t have is a price range.

i have did one of those a few years back and the only way you can do this is find another wrecked vehicle to work with,it will cost well more than the truck is worth to do this,i did it for myself thinking i could do it cheaply,i got fooled big time,it wound up costing me about 6 grand to build a 4 wheel drive truck, after buying both trucks and doing this it wasn’t worth it,the parts keep in mind are very expensive, you can buy a truck cheaper than you can do this, you have to literally change everything on the truck including all the wiring,i hope you got lots of time and money because you,ll need a lot of both,if you do pursue this make sure you are committed to it because once you start doing it you cant stop if you do the vehicle will be worthless, good luck.

You’ll have to ask the junkyard about that.

You better have a look at that front suspension, too. It’s completely different. As a result, the frames may be different, and that’s going to be hard to deal with.

I don’t think the cost of used parts would be anywhere near the cost of time involved in such a project. But hey it’s your time.

Keep in mind 1996 is an OBD II system, the PCM will have to be replaced in order to allow the speed sensor on your transfer case to work, unless the harness is there on a 2wd?? maybe, but I don’t think so. Make sure you check into the computer end of it. You may be able to buy a used PCM out of a 4wd and just swap the EPROM chip out, if it’s flash programed than no. If the wire harness isn’t the same on 2wd and 4wd the harness will have to be replaced with the PCM, the harness includes all the connectors for just about everything under your hood.

Parts, my guess PCM tCase Axles Interior Doodads, probably about 1,000 used. Maybe you get lucky and find the parts at a local yard then maybe 800.

Buy a $X$ as there is a lot of issues & cost> More in labor than the truck is worth>
