most are FWD front wheel drive
some are AWD all wheel drive
some can be shifted to low range 4WD or 4X4
many have ESC or traction control that operate normally in FWD then shift to AWD if the wheels spin or lose traction.
for example a Honda CRV has AWD but it’s not for mud, where a Nissan Xterra is a real 4WD capable of handling deep snow or mud if equipped with the proper tires.
nope. it can be a rear wheel drive if it does not specify that it is a 4×4.
it has to have 4 wheel drive to be a 4×4
Transmissions have nothing to do with 4×4 or 4×2
It can be but it doesn’t have to be.
A 4×4 means it has 4 wheel drive, which is not the same as all wheel drive.
