I’ve read so much on 4×4, now I’m confused… When can I put a 4×4 Jeep into 4×4?

Everyone says different things… I would want to use it really only in snowy conditions where a freeway is very slippery or city roads, but what speed MUST I keep it under in 4×4 high? When would I want to use 4×4 low?

    You can place it into 4 wheel high up to 55 mph on any slippery surface.The 4 wheel low is only for extreme conditions.

    Four wheel drive high (4 high).

    You would select 4WD high on snow and for easy to moderate off-road (dirt roads, easy trails). You would select it to have better use of traction (better than 2WD) to get going and to maintain forward movement with a reduced risk of slipping and spinning wheels.The added lateral stability of 4WD makes it less likely to slip sideways.

    Four wheel drive low (4 low).

    When "4-low" is selected the wheels create substantially more torque (on a Grand Cherokee its 2.72 times more) than in "4-high" – at the same time the vehicle moves at substantially slower speeds (2.72 times slower on a Jeep Grand Cherokee).

    4×4 is only for off road use or when conditions are slipery. all wheel drive (AWD) can be used any time. 4 low is used when you are getting stuck or need to pull something out like a stump it changes the gear ratio on the transmission and it revs quicker to get the torque from the engine you can only go like 30mph in this mode. the 4 high you can use up to 70mph. hope that helps. you can only use 4×4 when the roads are slick or when your on gravel cause the gears on the differential are made to have some slipage on the road/dirt. if they dont have that slipage you will end up messing up your differential or transfercase.

    4 high is ok up to about 45, maybe 50 MPH. you shouldn't need to go faster in 4X4 drive. its just not safe. People often get a false sense of security in 4X4 mode going fast. If the road is slippery enough for you to use 4X4 you need to slow down anyways. 4 low is meant for high torque applications. Like extreme off roading or towing in slipery conditions, or very rough roads. That is kept at low speed cause your engine is working twice as hard in a very low gear. Thats what gives you higher torque. Some people use 4 low when going down steep hills with a trailer ( Full of fire wood, etc ) to help safe your brakes. but you could loose traction if you are not experienced.

    4 low is for when the "**** hits the fan" you really have to watch the tach or listen to the engine though. it really works the engine pretty hard. The more you use it the sooner you will be rebuilding that motor.

    For most stuff 4 high is good. but as said, i would keep it under 50.

    Be careful using 4×4 on slick roads/ice/snow because the front tires will be pulling as well as the back pushing… this can cause you to do a serious spin if it gets away from you.

    You can use 4×4 high and go up to 65 if you wanted. But like said if you need to put it four wheel high, then the conditions must be not that great. When you are in 4×4 low the Jeep will only go around 15mph. I have had it in 4×4 low and after that your RPM's will shoot up and you will hear the engine get louder but not going any faster, this prety much means you have maxed out in 4×4 low can't go much faster. 4×4 low should only be used if you are already stuck or there is a realy good possibility that you are going to get stuck.
