JEEP WRANGLER ~ Manuel or Automatic Tranny???

Hey Jeep Wrangler Club!

I LOVE jeeps! I want to get one and soon. I have been looking at a couple.I want to get a 94 or 95 jeep wrangler. I have been looking at a couple some are manual some are automatic.

Someone told me that automatics are worth more, is this true? Which one is better? I want to be able to do some offroading. I currently have never been offroading but with a jeep I want the option to.

Thanks again, Hope you can help!

I've owned both and I'll take the auto tranny any day. You want to spend your time shifting or wheeling. Also, when's the last time you stalled an automatic. If you don't want that auto tranny to shift, put the shift selector in 1st or 2nd. As for the YJ, the manual tranny used brass syncros, this is why the YJ manual tranny crapped out so often. Automatics could add about $600 over the cost of a manual tranny.

    Happy Trails!

You would never seriously offroad an auto.

To successfully navigate down steep hills you will need your car "locked" into a gear such as 1st or second and allow it to roll down at a controlled decent.

An auto box can be locked back but has a tendancy to "run on" and therefore a lack of control which you need to pick up using the brake. This can cause wheel lock ups, and thus sideways and then boom bad roll crashy things happen.

The manual box will also be more efficient on the road.
    The auto will cost more.

The only good thing about the auto box is the ability to eat a burger and drive.!! reccomend give it a miss.

manual will be better off-roading, automatics cost more due to manufacturing costs, this does not make them "worth" more to you as an individual, except maybe the resell value …

more important that the transmission will be your engine size … whatever you do, DO NOT GET A 4-BANGER!! you will regret it – no power what-so-ever …

I've owned and driven nothing but jeeps since 1993.
I am now driving a 95 wrangler with auto trans, when I first bought it I was a little Leary , this is the first auto I've had.
I love it, and would highly recommend it to anyone.
Just make sure you get the straight six 4.0 liter

Like stated above it depends on what kind of offroading you want to do, if it is some mud and trail riding i would stick with the manual, but if you like the rocks and what not then i would get an automatic.

i love manual i learned to drive one when i was 12 best time of my life. if you drive far or are aways in traffic you wont like one but they are great for offroading i have a 78 jeep cj5 manual (love it) 96 dodge 2500 manual (love it) 2004 jeep grand cherokee auto (its ok) if you are used to one and have had one you will like it more than an auto but if your not used to driving one. you might not like it. go some where and take an auto and a manual for a test drive see which one you like more i like them cus it gives you something to do while you are driving

Will it be a Daily Driver(drive to work in rush hour, lot of city driving)? If yes, you may want to go auto, just for the ease. If you don't mind, I would say go stick! You will have a lot more fun and for the offroading you will do(not to serious), manual will do fine.

I say go for manual, you will have a lot more.
