Another possibility this time of year is AC condensate drain plugged, crimped, or sloshing out due to aggressive driving.

The last car I had with a heater core leak was a 69 Torino GT convertible. It would fog up the windows when I turned on the defroster and also had a strange smell burning coolant sprayed on the fan speed resistors.

I got water on my carpets once driving in high water with an early 80’s Subaru (back in the 80’s), but avoided that the next time we had heavy rains by closing the windows and running the blower on high to keep the cabin pressurized. My car was basically surfing in the wake of a tractor/trailer (back end felt light, but it had front/4WD).

if it,s anti-freeze then you need a new heater core. if it,s water then the drain tube for the AC came loose.
