If you have a hydraulic clutch, there is a good chance that either the Master or Slave clutch cylinder is leaking through the seals. You probably didn't feel any pressure at the clutch pedal or any funny noise. It usually starts with shifting little hard than nothing.

If the pedal was pushing all the way down without disengaging the clutch you probably do have a leak in the hydraulics. I had to but the whole master/slave system when mine went (I'm in the UK) but you can buy just the slave cylinder from parts stores over there which would save money.
