What 4×4 compact pickup truck is the best for serious off-roading?

I am thinking of unmodified Pickups such as Chevy S-10, Chevy Colorado, Dodge Dakota, Toyota Tacoma (pre-2006), Nissan Frontier, Ford Ranger,,,,
Appreciate your input.

Generation 1 (1983-1988) or Generation 2 (1989-1992) Ford Ranger's are probably the best bet for a wheeling rig, head over to http://www.therangerstation.com, about 90% of the rigs on it are made for wheeling, the others are in the street sceen. There are some beautiful rigs that can put some off road made vehicles to shame, and they were made cheaply, or there are ways to do it cost effectivly.

Compact pickups: I would go Ford Ranger for aftermarket adaptability

For real off-road ability: I would go Jeep CJ8 (old Scrambler)
I would love to find one and put a 6 cyl. diesel in it.

Check out the vehicles they use on the Dakar Rally. It's the world's most demanding off-road race.

You will find the best 4×4 cars there.

    Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero
    Volkswagen Touareg
    BMW X3/X5
    Hummer
    Toyota Landcruiser

I’m running down the same query.

But, I really want a pickup. I want a outside bed so I can put my dirty and muddy stuff in it, and not inside with me!

I had already kind of focused on the Toyota Tacoma and the Ford Ranger.

    And, y’all seem to agree.

I’d like to get something newer than 1990’s (and newer than 10 years old) preferably.
