Generation 1 (1983-1988) or Generation 2 (1989-1992) Ford Ranger's are probably the best bet for a wheeling rig, head over to www.therangerstation.com, about 90% of the rigs on it are made for wheeling, the others are in the street sceen. There are some beautiful rigs that can put some off road made vehicles to shame, and they were made cheaply, or there are ways to do it cost effectivly.

Compact pickups: I would go Ford Ranger for aftermarket adaptability

For real off-road ability: I would go Jeep CJ8 (old Scrambler)
I would love to find one and put a 6 cyl. diesel in it.
