2007 Rav4 rated no 1 by consumer reports

but that spare tire in the back leads to massive damage if hit from behind.

Honda crv has a 4cyl engine that is adequate for 95% of drivers.

hyundai Santa Fe is low priced alternative 10yr/100k warranty.

It is a good car. It was the first compact SUV and it was one of the best selling. It is reliable and practical. But, once the Honda CR-V was made to compete against it, the CR-V was always chosen Best Small SUV by car magazines and car shows. The CR-V is more fun to drive, gets better gas mileage, and is slightly more reliable.
The RAV4 is the only compact SUV that offer a V6 engine. The gas mileage of the V6 engine is no better than the bigger Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot.

I have a 2008 rav4 with the V6 and it is a great vehicle. Lots of power (268 hp) and not too bad gas mileage. 32 mpg (imperial) on the highway and I have a heavy foot. The ride is very smooth, gas peddle is very responsive and the vehicle handles very well. It has full lockup and downhill assist for offroading. In short it is lots of fun to drive. The 3.5 litre V6 is the same engine that is in the lexus RX350. My only complaint would be that the clearance isnt as much as the previous version of the Rav4 and it is too nice to take offroad. I havn’t really found a lift kit for it or a winch bumper. Honda CRV styling is super ugly and nowhere near as fun to drive. Hyundai does not compare for reliability. According to consumer reports RAV4 is the best rated of its class for consumer satisfaction. Gas mileage IS much better than the highlander (excepting the hybrid) It is a myth that the tire on the back creates much more damage. Most vehicles are too low to hit the spare (I know as I have measured my vehicle) and the ones high enough (Ford, GM and Dodge large trucks etc) would damage the back door extensively anyways. I think the tire would act as a greater preventative measure and having the tire on the back gives much more room inside the vehicle (trunk space) and also is easy to access when changing. In my books it is a 10 out of 10

I forgot to mention the huge amount of room inside. There is 6ft of space from the back of the front seats to the back door with the seats folded down and lots of leg room for the rear passengers when the seats are up leaving about 2.5 or 3ft behind the rear seats for cargo. It cant really be called compact anymore.
