What makes jeep 4×4 system so special?

Their Always winning 4×4 offroad contest. And being 4×4 of the year. And being called king of the road. And even the grand cherokee models. So what is so special and sets them apart from the others 4×4 systems. What makes the dodge ram 4×4 system different. Their made by the same company. Wouldn’t the jeep just be a ram in disguise.

The simplicity of the Jeep 4×4 system is one of its strongest points. The NP231 and 242 transfer cases are also used in other vehicles but usually with more complications.

Also, on most Jeep vehicles there is less over hang in front of and behind the wheels. This gives the Jeep better attack angles to obstacles.

The suspension also plays a role in 4×4 performance. The ability to flex over an obstacle increases off road traction. Jeep suspension is calibrated more toward flex than road stability compared to some other 4×4 vehicles.

It’s not just the 4X4 systems; it’s the vehicles.

Building a capable off-road vehicle requires building an entire VEHICLE with that use in mind. While Chrysler has occasionally used identical drivetrain components in both Dodge trucks and Jeep vehicles, the Dodges have ended up less capable (under some circumstances) because of clearance issues. A full-size half ton pickup’s length means it can’t pivot the same way even a Grand Cherokee can over obstacles, and the Dodges have been designed to haul rather than to be compact and nimble and get the drivetrain components as high up as possible.

The Jeep group also spends a considerable amount of time designing and testing the off-road systems (including transfer cases, traction control, limited slip, stability control…) to be useful off-road, where many manufacturers just go "That’ll satisfy a soccer mom who wants to go camping once in a while. Yay us!"
