Technically they are engines not motors. Diesel is good for pulling large loads. Gas is more typical and less of a bother in very cold weather.

well you will get arguments for both…it really depends on the owner and if maintinance gets done on a schedule basis….

one guy could get a gas engine and dog the hell out of it and never do maintinance and ruin it in a year or 2…the other guy could get a deisle and take really good care of it and do all the required maintinance and never have a problem…and vice versa…

so to answer your question…it depends on if you need a truck to work it, or a truck to daily drive and ocassionally haul a couch…

if so then get a gas truck….if you will work it and pull a trailer and equipment every day then a diesle is what you need.

Diesel gets you more millage per gallon, Gas got more horse power and engine life’s longer.
If you are buying brand new , my opinion is to get Diesel.

Dependable that goes to which Make of brand are you looking for? GMC and Dodge do have good reputation on the market. when it comes to a truck don’t go for asian trucks . they have good reliability but the body material are weaker than american made.

What are your intentions with it?

Diesel motors operate at much higher pressures, so they’re basically built to be bulletproof. You’re going to need to worry about extreme cold though, as diesel fuel will gel up on you if it’s cold enough outside.

Gas engines are plenty available and I’d imagine it’s a ton cheaper to fill them up and work on them, but I don’t know for sure. I did construction for a little bit with a guy who had all diesels and one gas truck, but he hated driving the gas one. It’d blow through fuel–especially while towing something.

    Diesel > Gas Period

you will have better fuel efficiency per liter or cubic inch of engine displacement with a Diesel engine than a Gas engine.

you will make more HP with a gas engine, BUT torque is where real power is utilized and the Diesel will ALWAYS dominate in the Torque category.
