With gas prices nearing $4. a gal why are big gas hog 4X4 SUV sales going up?

Two recent automotive news reports show large 4X4 SUV sales are up by 18% Is this just a way for people with more money than brains to show off? Are they saying that no matter how bad the gas crunch gets they can always get gas.
Please note; I’m talking about the huge 4X4 monsters that get roughly 8mpg and have no logical function on this earth, other than ego stroking. Hummer owners, take note.

More rebates and incentives to get the big trucks.

I have had big trucks (Suburbans and Tahoes) since 1990. I like the fact that I am less vulnerable in crashes; that I can haul stuff from Home Depot; more cargo room; more passenger room.

Besides that, I can afford the gas.

I wouldn’t say I have more money than brains… former MENSA member till I figured out I was paying to belong to a ‘society’ that I got no benefit from, so I saved my membership dues.

A 4×4 uses no more fuel than a large saloon or a sports car, they just have a bad name at present

People still want to compete with the Joneses’ and keep up the image that they can afford it- even if their bank account reads $0.

Maybe there are just more people who actually need bigger cars. Maybe because they have six kids or something that makes it economical to them.

These people either have enough money or they are stupid. Gas was at 3.30 a gallon at it’s high point, now it’s 2.87…here in northern ohio.

It is absolutely insane! I don’t understand it either. I long for the 70’s when people actually drove small cars because they couldn’t afford the high price of gas! I’m sure there are some starving children in India who would be well fed by the money these idiots spend on gas. The guys that really get me are the ones with the Hummers. They are obscene! I have no issue with people who drive SUVs to pull heavy trailers or carry construction materials. It’s the people (usually "yuppies" who are talking on their cell phones and drinking their Starbucks while they are driving) in these huge SUVs with nothing in them — why do they need such big cars?? So they feel protected while they drive like idiots almost killing everyone. Can you tell I have an issue with SUVs??? I wanted to make a bumper sticker that says "SUVs SUK!"

In a study they found that people in SUVs actually drive 10 miles an hour faster than they think they are driving. That’s why I find them so scary. Yeah, they want to be safe but what about all of us??

Where is this gas crunch you speak of? Have you ever seen a gas station not open for lack of fuel to sell? Where are we running out? See any cars on the side of the road because they couldn’t get gas? Which town on planet earth has run out of heating oil? Can you name just one? According to industry estimates, at current fuel usage and projected estimates for future growth and needs, there is enough oil supply for the next 110 years. Still think we are running out? Since it is not likely we will be so oil dependent in the future, I’m not loosing any sleep.
